The Six Degrees of Seiyuu: How Anime Are Secretly Connected

You have probably heard of "six degrees of separation" — the idea that any two people on Earth are connected through a surprisingly short chain of acquaintances. The pop-culture version, "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon," links Hollywood actors through the films they share. AnimeToAnime applies that exact concept to anime, using Japanese voice actors as the connective tissue.

The hidden web behind every anime

Every anime is voiced by a cast of seiyuu. Because a working voice actor appears in dozens or even hundreds of shows over their career, each series is silently tied to countless others through its cast. Picture a giant map where every anime is a dot, and a line connects any two anime that share at least one voice actor. That map is astonishingly dense — most popular anime sit only a hop or two apart.

This is why the game works. Two shows that seem to have nothing in common — a gritty seinen thriller and a cute slice-of-life comedy — can often be linked in a single move, because one supporting character in each happens to share a voice.

How a chain actually forms

Here is the core mechanic in plain terms. You start on one anime. You pick a voice actor from its cast, and then you look at every other anime that actor has been in. Any of those is a valid next step. Move to one, pick a new voice actor, and repeat. Each hop is a "degree," and the art of the game is finding the shortest path — or, in Endless Mode, simply keeping the chain alive as long as possible.

Why prolific actors are your best friends

Not all voice actors are equal for chaining. A newcomer with three credits is a dead end; a veteran with three hundred is a superhighway. The most valuable knowledge you can build is a mental list of prolific seiyuu — the workhorses who show up everywhere. Land on one of them and the whole map opens up. We cover the biggest names in our guide to the most prolific anime voice actors.

Only the Japanese cast counts

An important rule: AnimeToAnime uses the original Japanese voice cast exclusively. English dub actors do not create connections. This keeps the web consistent and rewards knowledge of the seiyuu industry specifically. If two shows share an English dub actor but not a Japanese one, that link simply does not exist in the game. We explain the reasoning in sub vs. dub.

From trivia to genuine discovery

The real magic of the six-degrees concept is that it turns idle knowledge into a discovery engine. Chasing a chain constantly surfaces shows you have never heard of but that share a voice you love — which is a shockingly good way to build a watchlist. Plenty of players report finding their next favourite series simply by following a beloved seiyuu down the rabbit hole.

Every anime is closer to every other anime than you think. Learn the voices, and the whole medium starts to feel like one connected map.
